There may be more to life than exercise, but you’ll get more out of life if you exercise. We all know it, and we all dread it…well, normal people dread exercise. Still, if you want to feel better, look better, and have more energy there is absolutely nothing that compares to regular, vigorous exercise. Let’s talk about the six main benefits of regular exercise.
Improves Weight Management
In the interest of integrity, I’ll tell you that exercise is not the most efficient tool for losing weight. Without delving too much into the science, plenty of research shows that when we exercise more, we typically eat more and usually consume more calories than we burned while exercising. Still, research also shows that regular exercise is the most important thing you can do for your overall health. Moreover, exercise can help you avoid weight gain and maintain a healthier weight. So while you’ll want to focus on what you eat to lose weight, exercise can help you maintain that weight loss in many ways. Regular exercise improves motivation and increases focus, so you’re more likely to make healthy food choices.
Regular exercise prevents heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, and many other chronic illnesses. In fact, when it comes to treating the vast majority of chronic diseases (including diabetes, heart disease, depression, and even cancer), medical experts always recommend increasing your physical activity levels.
Even a 30-minute workout or brisk walk can have a marked impact on your mood. Physical activity stimulates the release of endorphins and other brain chemicals associated with elevated mood. You may hate that 30 minutes in the gym, but you’re likely to feel much happier and more relaxed later in the day. Plus, research shows that people feel more confident, more attractive, and more energized when they exercise regularly.
Elevates Energy Levels
One of the biggest benefits of regular exercise is increased energy levels. Increased physical activity levels are invariably linked to improved muscle strength and endurance, so you’ll have more energy for your daily chores! Also, exercise improves your cardiovascular fitness so that oxygen and nutrients can be transported throughout your body more efficiently – and that also leads to boosted energy levels.
Insomnia is a disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Some signs you may be suffering from insomnia include:
- Taking more than 15 minutes to fall asleep at night.
- Waking up frequently throughout the evening and having difficulty going back to sleep.
- Regularly waking before your usual time.
- Feeling fatigued upon waking in the morning.
In fact, insomnia is a very common and likely under-diagnosed condition affecting adults. And what is the most effective treatment for insomnia? You guessed it, regular exercise. As long as you don’t exercise too close to your scheduled bedtime, increased activity levels will improve the quality of your sleep.
Physical fitness will improve your sex life for obvious reasons – you’ll have better endurance and more energy for the fun times. But there are other not so obvious reasons why exercise will improve your sex life. Exercise leaves you feeling more confident and physically attractive, but there is also research to show that regular physical activity is associated with enhanced arousal, particularly in women. Also, men who exercise regularly are considerably less likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction.
